The warden of the Orthodox Church of the Sign (‘Znamenie’) in the Rechnoy Vokzal suburb of Moscow is continuing to demand identity documents at baptisms, although this practice has been officially repealed. At a recent adult baptism, the young woman who was being baptized protested when the church warden demanded to see her documents. His response was that she should not worry “because we no longer pass this information on to the authorities.”               (KNS 11/19/87)
