In June of this year, the unexpected demolition of the 140-year old Sfinta Vinera Orthodox Church in Bucharest was witnessed by several hundred grieving onlookers. Police stamped out burning candles which had been set on the pavement next to the church. It was reportedly in the process of being restored when it was ordered to be torn down to make room for an extension of the “Victory of Socialism” Boulevard. (KNS 7/9/87)
