“USSR Newsbrief” reports that poetess Irina Ratushinskaya (OA #52) has received the maximum term of six months in an isolation cell. This punishment is usually given for “violation of camp regulations,” an accusation broadly interpreted by the camp authorities. Her hair has been shaved. A spell in the isolation cell undermines the health of prisoners even more than general labor camp conditions through lack of fresh air and exercise and reduced food rations. (KNS #238)
